ELIZABETH WHITTEMORE Charlestown, MA c. 1803 Eliza stitched this silk embroidered memorial with a portrait of herself standing next to a monument dedicated to her older sister Mary who died at the age of 21. The inscription reads, "IN Memory/ of/ Mary Whittemore/ obit Jan 28th/ 1803/ Wrought by her sister/ Eliza Whittemore." Eliza (1791-1860) and Mary (1781-1803) were two of six children born to Nathan Whittemore (1757-1825) and Mehitable Carter of Charlestown, MA. Eliza married Captain John Harris in 1818. They had four children and resided in Charlestown. Silk and watercolor on silk; 26 1/2" x 30" with original elaborate frame.
