Solomon stump work - Huber

King Solomon Judgment
Stumpwork,
England, mid-17th century

This large raised and padded (stumpwork) embroidery features the wise King Solomon offering to divide the baby in half to settle a dispute between two women, each claiming to be the baby's mother. Of course the real mother instantly offered the baby to the imposter to save its life. The King knowing his ruse would reveal the women's identities, awarded the baby to its mother.

Note; there is some damage to the background silk in the upper left corner.

Silk, metallic thread, and pearls on silk; 20 ¼" x 15" framed.
