17th century needlework picture depicting "The Woman of Samaria"
This beautifully executed c.1680 needlework picture shows Jesus, a Jew receiving water from a Samarian woman at Jacob's well. The Jews and Samarians traditionally had a racial hatred for one another and made a point of avoiding contact. In this case Jesus initiated the interaction by asking the woman for water. The woman, who had been married five times and was now living in sin with another man, was suprised with the interaction, but never the less, gave him water and was blessed with Jesus washing away her sins and giving her a fresh and cleansed spiritual life.
