Darning Sampler

This 18th century sampler is an incredible example of stitching skills.
A highly accomplished young lady worked this elaborate darning sampler both as a decorative work of art and to
hone her darning skills. Mastering the complexity of darning a hole by recreating intricate woven patterns with
a needle and thread, challenges even the most competent and talented needleworker.
The sampler is dated 1782 and inscribed with a variety of initials. In the center, S.R possibly representing her
name. The others are CS, ES, TE, PBVD - ALV, CAS, HS, EB - HS, PS.
Silk on linen; 18 ½" x 17 ½" unframed.
