Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Huber - Salem, MA sampler

Elizabeth Townsend
Probably Salem, MA dated 1793

This is one of the most graphic, folksy samplers we have seen. It has all the bells and whistles one can imagine. At the top is a vivid sky with a full burst sun and flying birds. The rest is comprised of a center-hall brick house with a fenced yard, numerous trees, animals, three ladies, two children and a colorfully dressed jester. It is inscribed at the bottom right: 1793/ Elizabeth Townsend.

It is stitched with silk thread over a unique dark brown wool fabric background.

The frame may not be original but it appears that the backboard is original.

Approximately 14" square with the frame.
