Needlework Sampler
Nancy Atwater
New Haven County, Connecticut 1798
The sampler is inscribed: Nancy Atwater (10 picked out) Years of age September 17th 1798.
Nancy was one of 10 children that grew up in Cheshire, CT and lived in a house that had descended in her father’s
family for 7 generations. The family house was a center chimney colonial and is probably depicted on the sampler.
The 12 people on the bottom of the sampler are not yet identified but are likely related to the sampler maker.
Her father Samuel Atwater was a drummer in the Revolutionary War and married Patience Peck.
Nancy was born September 13, 1789, married Ebenezer Doolittle and they had 5 children.
