Jane's sampler is considered one of the best examples to come from the "eminent schoolmistress" Martha
Barber's school in Marblehead, Mass. The layered format is filled with piquant people and animals. The piece is
solidly stitched with none of the ground fabric showing. Only one other sampler worked with this design is known,
see Betty Ring's, Girlhood Embroidery, Vol. I, page 137.
Silk on linen; 21" x 16 ½" sight size and in the original frame.
