Lucy Blanchard
Antique needlework sampler
Hopkinton, NH 1811
Lucy Blanchard (1797-1848), stitched this folksy colorful sampler in 1811 at age 13 while a schoolgirl in Hopkinton,
NH. She was the 5th of 7 children of Stephen & Betsey (Estebrook) Blanchard. The eye catching flowering border
and stylized trees surround four different style alphabets, numbers, and an open minded verse about contemplating
the mysteries of nature with a loving attitude.
For thinking minds, the book of nature is ever opened for our perusals, and a soul warm’d by sensibility and
gratitude reads the divine pages with pleasure and contemplates the great source of all with wonder reverence and
love.
Lucy, at age 46, married the highly accomplished Masonic Grand Master, Horace Chase (1788-1875) in 1844 as his
2nd wife. His first wife was Lucy's oldest sister Betsey.
Silk on linen; 20” x 20” framed.
