Sampler by LYDIA EVANS Lydia worked this antique sampler depicting a a large central building most likely inspired by the Westtown Boarding School. Classic characteristics of Burlington County sampler include large building flanked by trees on a lawn dotted with various people, birds, animals, flowers and trees, a centered cartouche with inscription, scattered spot motifs, an alphabet at the top bracketed with a double vine rosebud border. This sampler retains it's original ribbon boarder and mahogany frame. Lydia was one of five daughters and one son born to Reuben Evans & Martha Phillips of Burlington County, NJ. She was born in 1813, made this sampler in 1830 and later married Eli Evans, as his second wife. Silk on linen; 24 1/2 x 25 with frame. Sold
