Sarah Ann Hewes Antique Quaker Needlework Sampler Westtown, PA 1826 Sarah Ann Hewes (1815-1857) and her older brother John (1812-1887), both attended the Quaker School in Westtown, PA. Their parents Samuel Hewes and Anna Gilpin married in 1811 and resided In Chester County. Sarah’s maternal grandfather Gideon Gilpin was a farmer whose house became Lafayette’s headquarters during the Battle of Brandywine. He became a tavern keeper after the Revolution and was disowned by the Concord Friends Meeting. In 1787 he gave up tavern keeping and was taken back into the meeting with full membership.
