Lucy Luscobe
Sampler with black and white young lady friends
Dated 1809
Sampler inscribed: Lucy . Luscobe . Aged . 12 . March/ the . 1 . 1809.
Lucy worked this charming band sampler on a rather crude hand-spun linen background. The depiction of elegantly
dressed mirror image girls, one black the other white, the background fabric, and the (probably) misspelled last
name leads one to speculate that Lucy may have been the black girl depicted in the sampler. Although Lucy was a
fine needle worker she apparently didn’t have access to expensive fabric or an extensive education. Who knows,
but the two girls were no doubt good friends.
Cotton and silk on linen; 20 ¾’ x 7” sight.
