Beauty attracts the eyes but virtue charms the heart

Elizabeth, at age 9, worked this beautiful sampler with a large basket of flowers, a flowering vine border, alphabets, and verse about beauty and charm.

Inscribed:

Surry. (A small town 6 miles N of Keene, NH pop. about 450 in 1818, about 650 now.)

June 5th 1824 - Wrought by Elizabeth Maria Robinson AE 9 years.

Vital records indicate that that on April 24, 1834 Elizabeth married George Dickerson Dort and they had four children: Ann Elizabeth (b.1842), George Frederick (b.1845), Susan Maria (b.1850), and Henry Robinson (b.1857).

Her husband George was a carriage and sign painter and was associated with John Wheeler under the firm name "Wheeler & Dort" the partnership was dissolved Sept. 14, 1834 just five months after he married Elizabeth. Mr. Dort continued the business at the "old stand, one door north of the Keene jail". In 1842 he was a Lt. Col. in the 20th regiment NH militia.
