Loizo Carlota Lopez Diaz
San Matias, Spain 1818
Spanish band sampler
Loizo Diaz worked this very developed band sampler with a myriad of stitches, intricate motifs, and patterns
in 1818 when she was only seven years old under the instruction of Dona (Mrs.) Maria while attending the “La Concepcion
De Toro” school on Horno Street in the city of San Matias in southern Spain.
The inscription forms a rectangular frame, a characteristic that is found on many samplers from Spain and Mexico.
Interpreting the inscription, which starts on the lower left, is a challenge made more interesting because of the
lackofspacingbetweenwords.
Silk on linen; 29 ½” x 9 ½” sight.
