Judd family needlework memorial - Huber

Worked by Sarah Judd
Abby Wright's School
South Hadley, Massachusetts circa 1810

Silk embroidered memorials were very popular in the early nineteenth century. This example was worked at Abby Wright's School in South Hadley, MA. The use of heavy metallic thread to embellish the monuments is a unique characteristic of the Abby Wright School.

Inscribed on the monument:
In Memory of
Jacob W. Judd who died May 3rd 1805 / Aged 18 years
Clarissa Judd who died July 4th 1808 ? Aged 7 years

(missing letters left side)

This memorial was most likely worked by Sarah Judd at about age 17 in memory of her older brother Jacob Walker Judd and younger sister Clarissa Judd. Their parents were Sylvester Judd (1752 - 1832) and Hannah Burt (1754 - 1821). The family moved from Southampton, MA to Westhampton in c.1775.

Silk and watercolor on silk; 19 x 16 inches framed.
