Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Stephen and Carol Huber

Middletown, CT sampler by Mary Hart - from Stephen & Carol Huber

Mary Hart
Family Regester Needlework Sampler
Middletown, CT dated 1825

Mary at age 12, worked this Family Record sampler which included her English father, his first wife who was a widow, their two children (which included the sampler maker), and his second wife and their children. Mary stitched a floral garland at the top of her sampler and a townscape (which may be Middletown, CT) at the bottom.

Mary was born February 5, 1813, the first child of James Hart and Nancy Coe Johnson, in Middletown, Connecticut. She married Major Smith of Hamden, Connecticut on January 30, 1834 at Trinity Church in New Haven, Connecticut and they had one son.

The family had a strong connection to Dalton, Massachusetts and the surrounding Berkshire area, as both of James Hart's wives were from that area and some of the children were born there. Both of Mary's parents are buried in Middletown, Connecticut.

Silk on linen; the sampler is 16 ¾" x 16 ¾", framed 20 ½" x 20 ½".
