Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Boston/ Charlestown MA sampler 1777 - Huber

Marcy (Mercy) Hay
Needlework Sampler
Charlestown, MA dated 1777

Marcy Hay, at age 11, worked this charming little solidly stitched sampler, while attending school in the Boston area, possibly Charlestown. The center section is a surprising complex picture depicting a little sheppardess with a staff standing by a tree, a spotted turtle, a black sheep, a white sheep, a squirrel climbing the tree, and a giant parrot. The alphabets, numerals, inscription, are surrounded with a four sided flowering vine border.

Marcy (1766-1849), whose family lived in Charlestown, MA, was the daughter of John Hay (1724-1801) and Mercy Sutton (1727-1772). She married Jacob Farnsworth (1764-1798) in 1795 and they had one child John Hay Farnsworth. She married second ,Thomas Boylston (1740-1822).

Silk on linen; 14 ¼ x 11 inches framed.
