Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Newbury, MA sampler - 1785 - Stephen & Carol Hube

Newbury, MA samplerr dated 1785 - Stephen & Carol Huber

Anne Kent
Needlework Sampler
Newbury, MA dated 1785

Anne was only eight years old in 1785 when she stitched this beautiful sampler that incorporates numerals and several alphabets, a verse about the strength of virtue: Virtue Alone Needs No Defence, No Arms But Its Own Innocence, And an inscription: Anne Kent Was Born January The 21st 1777 Wrought/ The Sampler 1785. At the bottom she created a delightful embroidered vignette depicting a vase of flowers, trees and black and white sheep on green hillocks along with flying birds and insects. The sampler is framed with a three-sided undulating vine and flower border.

Anne was the middle child of nine children born to Joseph Kent and Jane Moody of Newbury, Massachusetts. She married Enoch Moody (possibly related to her mother) in 1798, at age 21, and they had five children.

Silk on linen; 24 ¾" x 19" framed.
