Needlework Sampler
Boston, MA 1765

Patience worked her early Boston sampler featuring a resting stag with exaggerated antlers in a bucolic setting with a duck pond, frolicking sheep and fluttering birds framed with flowering trees and a floating leafy vine. Above the bucolic vignette are some alphabets and a verse: On Earth Let My Example/ Shine * In Heaven/ Receive This Soul Of/ Mine To Bless Divinity. Aged 12 Patience Pigeon 1765, is inscribed within the lower part of the bold four-sided border.

Patience Pigeon (14 Sep. 1753- 1777) was the oldest of four children, born in Boston, to John Pigeon (1725-1801) and Jane Dumaresq (1728-1808). Patience died young at age 23, and is buried in Newton, MA. Her grave stone is heavily carved with a winged head at the top and an extensive inscription.
