Philadelphia, Pennsylvania sampler - Ann Marsh's School, dated 1791

This highly developed sampler inscribed: Elizabeth Ann Whiteside done in her 11th year of her age 1791, is laden with flowering motifs, alphabets, numerals, dogs, birds, sheep, and trees, and verses within compartmentalized sections surrounded on four sides with a sawtooth and flowering vine border. Elizabeth (Eliza) was born in Lancashire, England and the family moved to Philadelphia before Eliza was six years old. She married Samual Hurry at age 17 and they had 10 children. Her peripatetic life is easily deduced with the accompanying documents.

Silk on fine linen gauze: 17 ½" x 17" sight, 21 ½ " x 21" framed.
