A rare early American band sampler worked by Margaret Allen probably around age 9 or 10. It is inscribed: MARGARET ALLEN BORN IVNE (JUNE) 20 1721. The alphabets use I for J and V is also used for the letter U.

Margaret was born 300 years ago in Reading , an area in the north part of Boston township Joseph III Allen and Margeret Swayne. Margaret, the sampler maker, at age 22 married a sea captain William McHard and the family lived in Newbury, later Newburyport, MA. They had 10 children. She died in Newburyport at age 51.

The sampler consists of several intricately stitched bands and flowering vine motifs enhance the bottom section.
