JANE HAMMELL, Burlington County, NJ, dated 1829 Jane, aged 9, stitched one of the most exciting samplers worked in Burlington County. Her twin sister Elizabeth,
made an almost identical piece the same year. They both feature a spread eagle over a center hall house with vivid
flowers, parrots in cages, birds perched on trees, people and animals. Jane enhanced her sampler with an uplifting
verse from an Isaac Watts hymn.
