Stephen & Carol Huber: 17th - 19th Century Needlework

Weston, MA Nedlework Sampler - Stephen & Carol Huber

Hepzibah Harrington, c.1805
Antique Needlework Sampler
Weston, Middlesex Cty, Massachusetts

Hepzibah Harrington of Weston, Middlesex County, Massachusetts worked this c.1805 sampler at age 11 and included a memorial to her 15 year old brother. The intricate border is a classic characteristic of Middlesex County samplers.

My childifh days fwift glide away/ And riper years are coming on/ May heaven prepare me for that hour/ When I on earth fhall be no more/ Hepzibah Harrington.s wrought in/ the eleventh year of my age.

Hepzibah (1794-1877) was one of eleven children born to Abraham Harrington and Anna Russell of Weston. She married, as his second wife, Charles Traine (1783-1849) in 1815, who was first married to her sister Elizabeth (1785-1814). He graduated from Harvard in 1805, was the preceptor of Framingham Academy in 1808, the Baptist minister in town from 1811-1839, a representative to the General Court and a state Senator. They had four children.

Her sampler exhibits a typical Middlesex County border but the memorial to her brother is unusual.

Silk on fine linen; 22 ¼ " x 19" framed.
