Mary (Cany) Canney Mary worked this Adam and Eve sampler while attending school probably in south western New Hampshire. Her surname
has been picked out along with her age. Close scrutiny of the sampler indicates she stitched “Cany” as her surname.
Information accompanying the sampler points out that it was handed down in the family of Ichabod Channey (1774-1854).
It’s probable that Echabod’s mother, Mary, who died before 1799 was the sampler maker. This information is drawn
from the publication Sampler and Samplermakers by Mary Jaene Edmonds. Independent research has not disputed or
verified Mary Jaene’s information.
